Department of Civil Engineering

Department of Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering is the oldest professional engineering discipline, broken into several sub- disciplines including-environmental, geotechnical, structural, transportation, water resources, materials, coastal, surveying, and construction engineering. The Scope of Civil Engineering exists in both the public and private sectors. Civil engineers play a key role in the design, construction, maintenance, and development of new and existing facilities and structures.

The Team

The team comprises of dynamic individuals dedicated to developing students by enabling a deep understanding of fundamental principles and dedication to Rashtriya Nirman.

Labs

All the labs of Civil Engineering Department are equipped with the latest machines, survey equipment and software. The facility has – Total Station, Dumpy levels, AutoCAD, equipment for – Advance survey Designs, Fluid Mechanics, Construction Technology & Building Materials, Soil Testing, Strength of Materials, etc.

Industry Interface

The Department of Civil Engineering has a collaboration with Heidelberg cement and Gammon India which exposes the students to all the current industry technology and practices. Additionally hands on training is imparted by industrial experts during regular field visits to road and other civil construction sites, bridges, dams, and railway lines.

  • To make the department a center of excellence in the field of civil engineering and allied research.
  • To provide knowledge base and consultancy services to the community in all areas of civil engineering.
  • To promote innovative and original thinking in the of budding engineers to face the challenges of the future.

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)

  • PEO 1: To produce students who can excel in civil engineering profession or higher education by acquiring thorough knowledge in mathematical, computing and engineering concepts.
  • PEO 2: To produce students who can apply their knowledge and skills to real life problems thereby not only rendering safe and economical structures against natural calamities but also environmentally sustainable and useful to the society.
  • PEO 3: Mould and groom students to exhibit professional attitude, ethical behaviour, ability to communicate effectively with everyone and adapt to the latest developments and trends by engaging themselves in life-long learning.
  • PEO 4: Graduates will have awareness of contemporary professional issues and support the engineering profession through participation in professional societies and/or educational institutions

Program Specific Outcomes (PSOs)

The B.E. Degree Programme in Civil Engineering is offered in the department with
the following programme specific objectives:

  • PSO1: The graduates of this programme will be able to meet the needs of public in the design and execution of quality construction work considering the health, safety, cultural, societal and environmental factors.
  • PSO2: The graduates will analyze and design regular and complex structures having acquired the knowledge of building analysis software packages.
  • PSO3: The graduates will be able to work effectively as an individual or in a team having acquired leadership skills and manage projects in multidisciplinary environments.

Program Outcomes (POs)

  • Engineering Knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
  • Problem Analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusion using first principles of mathematics, sciences, and engineering sciences.
  • Design/development of solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations
  • Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.
  • Modern tool usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques , resources, and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modelling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.
  • The engineer and society: Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice.
  • Environment and sustainability: Understand the impact of the professional engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of, and need of sustainable development.
  • Ethics: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of engineering practice.
  • Individual and team work: Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader in diverse teams, and in multidisciplinary settings.
  • Communication: Communicate effectively in complex engineering activities with the engineering community and with society at large, such as, being able to comprehend and write effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentations, and give and receive clear instructions.
  • Project management and finance: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the engineering and management principles and apply these to one’s own work, as a member and leader in a team, to manage projects and in multidisciplinary environments.
  • Life-long learning: Recognize the need for, and have the preparation and ability to engage in independent and life-long learning in the broadest context of technological change.
